Transgender Day of Remembrance
On November 20th, 2015, we will be celebrating the 16th anniversary of Transgender Day of Remembrance. Gwendolyn Ann Smith, a transgender woman and activist, founded this day in 1999 to memorialize the deaths of those who have been murdered due to transphobia. This day sheds light on the constant harassment and violence that people from the trans community still endure today. On this anniversary, many are gathering at Montreal City Hall and we are asking you to please join us for a candlelight vigil to support the transgender community and it’s many loses.
This Transgender Day of Remembrance is estimated to bring about the largest turnout yet due to the surprise visit from our celebrity guest, Janet Mock! She is flying in from New York solely for this day and will be speaking on behalf of the transgender community. Mock has been an advocate for the trans community since 2011 when she publicly came out as a transgender woman. She has been a victim of transphobia since the age of 18 and would appreciate any and everyone who will come hear her speak about how she’s overcome this part of her life due to the support from the trans community and all it’s other advocates and activists.
Support the fallen and the fighting.
